Army Chief General Dwivedi: “Integration of Armed Forces Will Happen” – Why Theatreization is Key for India’s Defense Future
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi stressed that the integration of armed forces through theatreization is inevitable. Highlighting coordination with the Army, Navy, Air Force, ISRO, and civil agencies, he explained why joint commands are vital for India’s national security.
Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi has strongly backed the integration of armed forces through theatreization, asserting that “this transformation will definitely happen, no matter how much time it takes.” He emphasized that in times of war, coordination between the Army, Air Force, Navy, defense agencies, ISRO, Civil Defense, Railways, NCC, and state and central administrations becomes critical, making theatreization unavoidable.
General Dwivedi’s remarks come amid diverging opinions from Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh and Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, who earlier expressed distinct viewpoints on the structure of joint commands. The lack of consensus delayed the implementation of theatreization, but the Army Chief’s clear stance has put speculations to rest.
Explaining the need, General Dwivedi said:
“During war, it is not just the Army that fights. Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, cyber and space defense agencies, along with ISRO and Civil Defense, all play crucial roles. A joint theatre command will ensure seamless coordination.”
He further added that the armed forces should not push forward the theatre command under pressure but with strategic clarity. CDS General Anil Chauhan has already assured that differences between the three services will be resolved “in the best possible manner in the interest of the nation.”
Highlighting public participation, the Army Chief recalled the role of 72,000 NCC cadets during Operation Sindoor, who volunteered in civil defense. Referring to the Ukraine war, he said national security is not only the responsibility of soldiers but also of ordinary citizens who must stand for the nation when required.
On defense reforms, General Dwivedi praised the government’s GST reduction, calling it a major boost for the defense corridor. He said this reform will encourage investment, particularly benefiting MSMEs and startups with limited capital. The Army is focusing on research & development, training, and modernization, all of which will gain momentum with this policy change.
With the Army Chief’s strong statement, India’s path towards theatreization of armed forces has received fresh momentum, underscoring the importance of unity in defense strategy for future challenges.
