Amarnath Yatra Halted Again After Heavy Rains, Landslides

Amarnath Yatra halted again after heavy rains, landslides, and sudden floods had created dangerous conditions.

Amarnath Yatra has been stopped once again. This step has been taken after heavy rain and landslides on the way to the Yatra. Landslides have occurred at two places in the Banihal area of Ramban.

After this, the Jammu-Srinagar highway has been closed.

Due to the falling of stones from the mountains, the batch of Amarnath pilgrims from Jammu has been stopped as a precautionary measure at Chadrankot in Ramban.

Amarnath Yatra halted again: Relief and rescue teams are busy clearing the way.

According to the news agency, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police have said that traffic on NH-44 in Mehmed, Ramban has been stopped due to stones falling from the mountains.

The police have appealed to the people not to proceed until permission is given.

Earlier, on Tuesday afternoon, heavy rains lashed the mountains around the holy Amarnath cave.

This led to a sudden flood-like situation. In many places, the water started coming down rapidly from the mountains.

After this, the officials immediately alerted the passengers and evacuated them from there, and took them to Panjtarni Camp.

According to officials, there was no loss of life or property during this period. It has been said in media reports that about 4 thousand passengers were evacuated during this period.

The flash floods amid heavy rains brought back memories of July 8, when 15 pilgrims were killed and 55 others were injured in a flood after a cloudburst near the holy cave, the news agency reported.

The tents and anchors around the cave were washed away in this flood. The relief and rescue operations went on for six days.

According to media reports, the 26th batch of 2189 pilgrims left for Pahalgam and Baltal from Bhagwati Nagar Jammu, the base camp of Amarnath Yatra on Tuesday morning.

This batch included 1476 men, 668 women, 3 children, and 42 sadhus. So far about 2.5 lakh people have participated in the Amarnath Yatra. It is likely to cross the three lakh mark within a week.
