Kerala Animal Husbandry Minister J Chinchu Rani confirmed the outbreak in the state and directed pig farms to strictly implement biosecurity and waste disposal techniques as part of the swine fever action plan.

Talking to reporters on Friday, the minister said, “African swine fever has been confirmed in pigs in the Manantwadi area of ​​Wayanad district.”

“The disease was confirmed by ICAR’s National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD).”

“The minister has issued instructions to conduct strict checks at all border posts and prevent the entry of vehicles carrying pork, pork products, and pig excreta into the state.”

The minister has also suggested that if any wild boar dies under unusual circumstances, it should be reported to the forest department.

It was first described in Kenya, East Africa, in 1921, and soon after in South Africa and Angola, as a disease that killed pigs. Contact with warthogs proved to be important in the transmission of the virus.
