Air India crash 2025: Former AAIB Chief Questions Air India Crash Report

Air India crash 2025: Former AAIB chief Aurobindo Handa says the Air India crash preliminary report is not enough; experts urge impartial probe, caution against pilot-blaming.

‘Preliminary investigation report not enough’, former AAIB chief’s big statement on Air India Crash Report. Former Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) chief Aurobindo Handa on Sunday said it would be premature to conclude the role of the pilots from the preliminary investigation report on the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad last month. The accident’s potential cause will be mentioned in the final report.

A day after the AAIB released the preliminary investigation report of the plane crash, Handa said that we should allow the AAIB to complete the investigation fairly and transparently. The preliminary investigation report is not enough to find out the cause of the accident. Handa has investigated more than 100 plane crashes, including the Air India Express plane crash in Kozhikode in 2020.

‘AAIB has done a good job’

He said, AAIB has done a good job. It will now concentrate on determining whether there was a mechanical or electrical failure, as well as the reason and mechanism behind the fuel switches’ movements. The preliminary investigation report of AAIB states that three seconds after the plane took off on the runway, one after the other (at an interval of one second), the fuel supply switches for both engines went from ‘run’ (on) to ‘cutoff’ (signal to shut down). One pilot can be heard saying, “Why did you turn off the switch?” in the voice recording of the cockpit. The other responded, “I didn’t.”

The report does not specify which pilot asked the question or responded. According to Handa, some people, notably in the international media, are claiming that one of the pilots was at fault. I would want to remind my seasoned colleagues in the aviation business to refrain from speculation.

Air India crash 2025: Demand that the plane crash be investigated impartially.

Mark D. Martin, the founder of Martin Consulting and an aviation safety consultant, called for an unbiased probe into the jet crash on Sunday, according to a major news agency.. He asserted that the preliminary investigation report issued by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau deliberately attempts to shift the blame from the pilots and exonerate the ‘original equipment manufacturer’.

He criticised the pilots’ actions, particularly the switching of the fuel cutoff switch from ‘run’ to ‘cutoff’ mode within a few seconds despite early indications of engine failure. According to him, fuel cut-off protocols only apply when the engines are operating and not after they have already failed.
