25 years of the Kargil War are over, and the Air Force recalls “Operation Safed Sagar.”

The Indian Air Force on Sunday recalled the role of the force in the Kargil war that took place 25 years ago.

At that time, the Air Force carried out thousands of combat missions and helicopter flights to strengthen the efforts of the Army in the fight against Pakistan.

The Ministry of Defense said in a statement that the Air Force is celebrating ‘Kargil Vijay Diwas Silver Jubilee’ at Air Force Station Sarsawa from 12 to 26 July in honor of the heroes who made the supreme sacrifice for the country.

India defeated Pakistan in this battle fought on the world’s highest battlefield in 1999.

In honor of all the air warriors who gave their lives in the defense of the country, Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal VR Choudhary placed flower tributes at the War Memorial at the Air Force Station on Saturday.

During this, a spectacular air show was organized in which the Akash Ganga team, Jaguar, SU-30 MKA, and Rafale fighter jets participated.

In memory of the martyred heroes, the MI-17V5 helicopter flew missing man formation. Helicopters like Cheetah and Chinook also performed on this occasion.

Fought bravely in the Kargil War of 1999.

The program was attended by residents of the Saharanpur area, ex-servicemen, dignitaries, and personnel of defense establishments located in Roorkee, Dehradun, and Ambala.

According to the statement, the Indian Air Force has a proud legacy of courage and sacrifice of its brave warriors who fought bravely in the Kargil War of 1999.

It was a milestone in the history of military aviation.

Operation Safed Sagar in the Kargil War is also proof of the military capability of the Indian Air Force to face the challenges of steep slopes and winding heights of more than 16 thousand feet.

The Air Force flew about five thousand combat missions, 350 reconnaissance/ELINT missions, and about 800 escort flights at that time.

The Indian Air Force also flew more than two thousand helicopter flights for the safe evacuation of the wounded and air transport operations.

What is Operation Safed Sagar?

During Operation Safed Sagar, Air Force Station Sarsawa’s 152 Helicopter Unit, dubbed “The Mighty Armor,” was crucial.

On 28 May 1999, Squadron Leader R Pundir, Flight Lieutenant S Muhilan, Sergeant PVNR Prasad, and Sergeant RK Sahu of 152 HU were given the responsibility of flying as Nubra Formation to directly attack enemy positions at Tololing.

After successfully carrying out this air attack, their helicopter was targeted by the enemy’s Stinger missile in which four brave soldiers sacrificed their lives.

For this act of extraordinary courage, they were posthumously awarded the Air Force Gallantry Medal.
